Social Food in Rotterdam

During the last years Rotterdam’s culinary world has been getting a great boost. New concepts of restaurants and bars have been blossoming, just like the city itself. You can find numerous modern Cafés in a modern Rotterdam. But besides these „hip” locations, Rotterdam has more to offer. We want to introduce you with several cafés and restaurants with a social background. They are offering healthy food in a pleasant atmosphere. In these locations, you will feel welcome, knowing you are participating in a bigger story than a simple restaurant.

Heilige Boontjes

Heilige Boontjes is a café which is located in an old police station near the Eendrachtsplein. If you speak Dutch, you can already guess what kind of concept is hidden behind the name. Heilige Boontjes means “holy little bean” and is a nickname for somebody pretending to be innocent. Kind of like the expression “goody two shoes”. The café was created in September 2016, following it’s success of the first café in the West of Rotterdam. Heilige Boontjes gives socially disadvantaged individuals a new perspective in offering them work in the café. The head of reintegration at Heilige Boontjes, Rodney van den Hengel, has a personal connection to the idea behind the Heilige Boontjes: “I used to be the kid that we try to help here now.” He started to work together with police officer Marco den Dunnen and together they created the concept of reintegrating people with a criminal background. The rehabilitation program supports the participants in managing their income, securing housing and health insurance. Later, they get trained in roasting coffee and barista skills. The coffee is really tasty and fits perfectly to their homemade apple pie.

Fröbel

A really welcoming place in Rotterdam is Fröbel Lunchroom. It is a café-restaurant where you can get delicious sandwiches and fruity smoothies. But that’s not all about Fröbel. The purpose of Fröbel is to give individuals with a handicap a good place to work. The idea behind it is to focus on what people with a handicap can do, so  that they can develop themselves. “To fröbel” means to develop yourself by doing something. German pedagogue Friedrich Fröbel (1782-1852) introduced this concept. There are two Fröbel restaurants in Rotterdam, with around 30 handicapped employees who are working in both locations.

Besides this worthily concept, they serve great food and smoothies in a warm atmosphere. When you enter the restaurant, it is calm and restful and you feel immediately welcome. The food is made with good products and with a lot of love and you really can taste it.

Hotspot Hutspot

‘Good food for everyone’ is the slogan of Hotspot Hutspot. The aim is to integrate social and economic disadvantaged people and bring different backgrounds together in a communal project. In the restaurant, they offer a 3 course menu for 9€ and if you can spend more, you have the possibility to pay a dish for someone else, who otherwise can’t come. A part of the vegetables come from the common garden, the so-called hotspots, which are temporary locations in the neighbourhood. Everyone can come to help in the garden and work together with the neighbours, adolescents and voluntaries.
